ABOUT THE BUILDING

Bonnydale Shopping Centre

Confluence is painted on the northside of the Bonnydale Shopping Centre at the intersection of 17th Street and 14th Avenue South.

Bonnydale Shopping Centre was built in 1954. It was purchased by the Wong family in 1964 and Hong Wong and his wife, Ellen Wong, took over Bonnydale Foods located at the north end of the mall in 1965. At that time, (north to south), the other businesses included a pizza parlor, an office, Bonnydale Beauty Salon and Bonnydale Drugs .  The Wong family still owns the property though the businesses have changed.

History from the Wong Family:

 BUSINESSES OVER THE YEARS

History of businesses in the Bonnydale Shopping Centre. Left to right represents south to north

The pizza restaurant closed in the 1970’s and a TV repair shop was opened.  When the TV repair closed, Mr. Wong combined that space to enlarge Bonnydale Grocery.  The Wongs retired in 1985 and sold the business which ran for 7-8 years as Jennifer’s Grocery; then changed hands for another year before the grocery shut down.  A disability support office opened in that location, and subsequently was replaced by Libertine Tattoo which remains in that location presently. A nail shop sublet was in the accessory space, more recently replaced with Caravan Records and Antique.  The other businesses are detailed above.  Tables with umbrellas and a paved plaza were installed in the 1990’s, replacing a grassed lot at the north end of the plaza.  It is along this north wall that the current art installation is being painted.

Bonnydale Grocery was a community hub in its heyday. Several families did their weekly grocery shopping there for the convenient hours and the quality of goods. Kids congregated there after school, and later brought their children back to the store as parents. There were seasonal displays for school supplies, Halloween, Christmas, and Easter..  Bedding plants were placed out front in the spring, and the store was decorated with Christmas decorations each December.

The neighborhood’s demographics have changed as has the mall, but the shopping centre remains in the community and with the current art mural installation, will enhance and bring together the neighborhood.
